Will Of Israel Meadows
May 8, 1821

In the name of God, Amen. I, Israel Meadows, being week in body, but sound mind and memory do make, ordain and publish this instrument to be my last will and testament. It is my will and desire that Sydney L. Meadows, son of Jacob B. Meadows, have cow now at the house of said Jacob B. Meadows and that Perry A. Meadows, son of said Jacob Meadows, have the calf of said cow. It is my will that the tract of land down in Estill County on Millers Creek adjoining the land of said Jacob B. Meadows and the land of John Horn be divested to said Sydney L. Meadows and Perry A. Meadows, their heirs and assigns for ever. It is my will that the tract of land on which I live in Estill County be divested to John Horn, his heirs and assigns for ever, upon his paying twenty dollars to my estate and his giving up to my estate a bay mare that said Horn has. It is my will that my wife Barbara Meadows have the whole tract of land for a home during her natural life that is herein before divested to John Horn and life estate have preference over the inheritance to said Horn, that is to say that said Horn have the same after her death and my request is that my said wife do not keep too much stock on the place. My will is that the tract of land that William Edens lives on in Estill County on Millers Creek or a branch of said creek, be divested to my grandson James W. Cole to him and his heirs for ever, and I also leave to him my rifle gun. All the balance of my estate I give to my wife during her natural life, and my wish is that she dispose of the same as she pleases, except, the colt of my bald faced mare with which she has now in foal which I give to Sally Horn and excepting the first colt of the bay mare that John Horn is to give up to my estate which first colt, when it is foaled, I give to Elizabeth Horn.

I have here unto set my hand and affixed my seal this 20th day of September 1827.

Israel Meadows

I make the following addition to the above will and testament and as part thereof to wit, it is my will that my granddaughter, Tabitha Meadows, have a heifer that is at my house provided my wife should be willing to it.

702 What's in a name?
I have seen this name spelled more ways than any other over the years of my research. In my opinion, the correct spelling would be Archelaus after the historic biblical person, Herod Archelaus. I don't believe that our ancestors during his lifetime were purposefully imaginative and inventive in the naming of their children as became so common in the United States in the Twentieth Century. Given that so many people were unable to read and write during this time period, it is far more likely that the name was simply spelled phonetically resulting in the many variations that we see in records. Having seen so many variations, It is just as likely that the writers of the various records were trying to spell the name Achilles after the Greek Warrior.

704 While in Germany, the Schimka family may have lived in town called Castrop-Rauxel which is a former mining city in the eastern part of the Ruhr Area. Schimka, James Sr (I113)

705 While possible that the family moved to Indiana and two of the children being married there, I find it less likely that their spouses were born in the same vicinity where they had lived in Kentucky. See also Elvie Ashcraft. I think it likely that this source is in error. Use this record with caution.

707 While there exists a shared headstone for John Wesley Smith and Christian Ann Back at the Back Cemetery in Menifee County, Kentucky, the death certificate of Christian Ann Back records that she was buried at Keene Cemetery in Jessamine County, Kentucky.

I do not have confirmation of this or whether a headstone was placed in Keene Cemetery. If you can confirm this, please click on the "Suggest" link to send me an update or your contact information.

Christian went by the name of Chrissy. Chrissy was a tall robust person, quite the contrary from her mother who was a person of small stature. Christian Back's mother had a full head of red hair and she was a full-blooded American Indian. That information was handed down from my Grandfather, Howard Francis Boyle, and the part about the American Indian heritage is probably incorrect. Nearly all of the information that came from my grandfather has proven correct at least in part. For example, closer relatives, have corrected the nickname by which Christian was known to "Christy" rather than "Chrissy". To date, I have found no evidence to support any American Indian heritage in any of my direct ancestor lines.
New research has uncovered a name line reaching back to the great grandparents of Christian. If a document can be found that proves Benjamin Back and Sarah are the parents of Christian then, we will pick up these three generations and their family members. In the first quarter of the year 2002, I did locate the record that I was looking for, a death certificate of Chistian Back, that gives the full names of both of Christian's parents. The record confirmed the names of Christian's parents, which I first obtained from the family bible of Howard Francis Boyle and Ruby Jean Barkeloo-Boyle. The record also gave me the maiden name of Sarah which I now know was "Wells".

I believe that the date of birth on the death certificate is not correct. If Delina was born during the month of October, then the 1880 census places her date of birth at 1870 and the 1920 census confirms this date.

Israel and Barbara had ten children. Nancy was their oldest child, William was the oldest son, Jacob was the seventh child and Rebeckah was the youngest. Some other Meadows names that appear in records from Estill County's Courthouse are, Tabitha Meadows, and Ezekiel C. Meadows. These are probably additional children of Israel's.

PENSION: REVOLUTIONARY WAR RECORDS - Selected Records from Revolutionary War Pension and Bounty Land Warrant Applications Files - Film No. M805-578 - Abstracted from copies of the original claims by June Bork, June 1993:

PENSION: ISRAEL MEADOWS - wife BARBARA (Greene): No. W.8451

PENSION: (Barbara Meadows, a resident of Estill Co, KY in 1840, age 91 (born 1749?) and drawing a Pension as WIDOW of a Rev. Soldier whose given name is not stated on Census).

PENSION: 1818 Sep 22 - Estill County, Kentucky - Personally appeared ISRAEL MEADOWS, aged 62 years; who made oath that he is a citizen of Estill County and that he was enlisted for 2 years at the Smith Spring in the state of Virginia on or about July 1776 by James McNett and served under Capt. Moses Arbucle in the 12th or 13th Regiment of Virginia Line until about August 1778 when he was honorably discharged from service at POINT PLEASANT (Lord Dunsmore's War) in Virginia (now West Virginia); that he was in service 2 years and 3 months having served 3 months longer and was not in any battles of importance. That he is in reduced circumstances and stands in need of the assistance of his country for support; and that he has lost his discharge and has no evidence in his power of his services and discharge other than that which is here transmitted.

PENSION: ALEXANDER REED states that he was a soldier in the war of the revolution and served in the same company with the within named Meadows for about 18 months and knows that Meadows served for the period in the company and regt. mentioned... and understood that Meadows marched to the frontier near POINT PLEASANT..

PENSION: 1820 Oct 23 - Clarke Co, KY--- On this day personally appeared ISRAEL MEADOWS, aged 65 years, residence in Estill County and declares that he served in the war as a private.. and that he is entitled to a Pension.. Cert. No.10,533 dated 12 May 1819.. "that I have not sence that time by gift, sale or in any manner disposed of my property for any part thereof with intent thereby to demonish it as to bring myself within the provisions of an Act of Congress.. my property consists of 1 mare valued at $20; 1 cow at $10; household furniture and farming utensils at $20 = Total $50.. that the debts due me are not more than equal to what he owes other people.. that he has no trade and is by a common labour.. that his wife is aged 63 years.. that he and she are infirm and unable to support themselves by their own labour and without the aid of public or private bounty that they cannot exist.. /s/ ISRAEL MEADOWS

PENSION: 1838 Oct 5 - Estill Co, KY-- Personally appeared BARBARA MEADOWS, widow of ISREAL MEADOWS, DEC'D who was reputed to be a soldier of the revolution and a pensioner.. that she is the widow and her husband was in the war before her marriage and again after their marriage for several months.. she thinks at least 12 months at POINT PLEASANT.. she knows of no record of her age, but she has always understood that she was born on Easter Day in the year of General Braddocks defeat which she thinks was in 1757 and according to her best recollection she was married at the age of 23 going on 24 years old on the 1st day of July but the year she can not recollect. At the time of her marriage she and her husband resided in Greenbrier County, Virginia but there being no parson near, they went over Peters mountain and married on the east side thereof at the house of one Henry Smith but whether this was in Greenbrier County or not (in Botetourt Co) she does not know nor does she recollect the name of the parson who married them. Her first child was born the next spring after her marriage and if living would be 60 years old next spring. She had ten children by her husband but has no record of their ages except a mutilated one from which she can tell that her 7th child was born November 8 1792 and her 10th and last on the 18 July 1799. She knows of no person living who witnessed her marriage.. she states that after her marriage she and her husband continued to reside in Greenbrier Co Virginia until a year or two after the birth of her youngest child that they then moved to Madison County Kentucky (early in 1800) where they resided a few years before they moved to Estill county, Kentucky when her husband died.. she 'thinks 11 years since in the month of September past and where she has ever since continued to reside.. She states positively that her husband was a pensioner of the govt. of the U.S. for several years previous to his death and drew as such $96 per year at Lexington, KY.

PENSION: 1838 Oct 5 - ZACHARIAH PHILLIPS of Estill Co, KY says on oath that he was born in the year 1763 and first became acquainted with ISRAIL MEADOWS DEC'D ABOUT 50 years ago in the County of Greenbrier, Virginia.. that he and BARBARA MEADOWS his widow who has signed the foregoing declaration were then living together as man and wife and continued to do so till the death of the said Izrail which took place as he believes on 30 September 1827 in Estill County and that he never heard any one to question the loyality of their marriage. At the time they had several children one named NANCY who he afterwards married. His wife was at that time a girl 18 or 20 and from what he has always understood as to the age of his deceased wife she would if living be 60 years old the next spring.

PENSION: He thinks that the said BARBARA MEADOWS at the time of their marriage was at that time in BOTETOURT COUNTY... /s/ ZACHARIAH PHILLIPS

PENSION: 1839 - the widow stated that she was married in 1778 or in 1779.

PENSION: 1842 - she made another statement in which she said that her previous statement that she was married 1778 or 1779 was an error, as she had become convinced that her marriage took place in 1776 - she having been a married woman at the time her husband was in the army. BARBARA MEADOWS was allowed pension on her application executed 5 Oct 1838. She stated that she had ten children by her marriage, the names of some of the children were:

PENSION: Oldest, a daughter, NANCY MEADOWS born 1779 and married ZACHARIAH PHILLIPS and was dead in 1839

PENSION: Oldest son, WILLIAM MEADOWS, aged 58 years in 1839 (born 1781)

PENSION: Tenth child, daughter REBECKAH MEADOWS, born 18 July 1799. (other children not shown).

PENSION: That her name before marriage was BARBARA GREENE.
