A year to the day from his enlistment, William received a debilitating wound at the Battle of Chickamauga in northern Georgia. He was shot through the left shoulder and clavicle bone and suffered some paralysis from the wound. He was left and remained at one or more hospitals, including Forsyth, Georgia until going before a disability review board in Augusta, Georgia on March 11, 1865 where he was recommended by his examiners for discharge and placement on the Retired list of Soldiers of the Invalid Corps. | ||

The Battlefield of Chicamauga, Fought the 19th and 20th of September 1863. This detailed view gives the location of Bragg's Confederate forces, primarily on the east bank of West Chickamauga Creek, on the first day of the battle. (DJS) At the Battle of Chickamauga were two of my direct ancestors, Levi C. Winkle (Union) and William Harrison Smith (Confederate). Both enlisted as Privates and finished the war with the rank of Corporal, the latter receiving a debilitating gun shot wound at the Battle of Chickamauga. |

The National Park Service's Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System database contains two entries for the name William Smith, both for the Confederate 5th Mounted Infantry and two entries for the name William H Smith one for the Union 5th Kentucky Infantry and the other for the Confederate 5th Kentucky Mounted Infantry. The last agrees with 1890 Special Census in the rank out of Corporal. This isn't conclusive though and until more records are gathered, should be treated as unsubstantiated. |

John Wesley Smith and later, William Harrison Smith, his father, serving as Postmaster in Wilcox, Morgan County, Kentucky. John served as Postmaster in 1905 and then his father in 1907. The town given in the record index shows Wilcox and from the record it appears that the post office was moved to Ezel in 1915. It would appear that Wilcox is no longer a recognized community in Kentucky; it does not appear as a Census Designated Place. |
