PENSION: ISRAEL MEADOWS - wife BARBARA (Greene): No. W.8451

PENSION: (Barbara Meadows, a resident of Estill Co, KY in 1840, age 91 (born 1749?) and drawing a Pension as WIDOW of a Rev. Soldier whose given name is not stated on Census).

PENSION: 1818 Sep 22 - Estill County, Kentucky - Personally appeared ISRAEL MEADOWS, aged 62 years; who made oath that he is a citizen of Estill County and that he was enlisted for 2 years at the Smith Spring in the state of Virginia on or about July 1776 by James McNett and served under Capt. Moses Arbucle in the 12th or 13th Regiment of Virginia Line until about August 1778 when he was honorably discharged from service at POINT PLEASANT (Lord Dunsmore's War) in Virginia (now West Virginia); that he was in service 2 years and 3 months having served 3 months longer and was not in any battles of importance. That he is in reduced circumstances and stands in need of the assistance of his country for support; and that he has lost his discharge and has no evidence in his power of his services and discharge other than that which is here transmitted.

PENSION: ALEXANDER REED states that he was a soldier in the war of the revolution and served in the same company with the within named Meadows for about 18 months and knows that Meadows served for the period in the company and regt. mentioned... and understood that Meadows marched to the frontier near POINT PLEASANT..

PENSION: 1820 Oct 23 - Clarke Co, KY--- On this day personally appeared ISRAEL MEADOWS, aged 65 years, residence in Estill County and declares that he served in the war as a private.. and that he is entitled to a Pension.. Cert. No.10,533 dated 12 May 1819.. "that I have not sence that time by gift, sale or in any manner disposed of my property for any part thereof with intent thereby to demonish it as to bring myself within the provisions of an Act of Congress.. my property consists of 1 mare valued at $20; 1 cow at $10; household furniture and farming utensils at $20 = Total $50.. that the debts due me are not more than equal to what he owes other people.. that he has no trade and is by a common labour.. that his wife is aged 63 years.. that he and she are infirm and unable to support themselves by their own labour and without the aid of public or private bounty that they cannot exist.. /s/ ISRAEL MEADOWS

PENSION: 1838 Oct 5 - Estill Co, KY-- Personally appeared BARBARA MEADOWS, widow of ISREAL MEADOWS, DEC'D who was reputed to be a soldier of the revolution and a pensioner.. that she is the widow and her husband was in the war before her marriage and again after their marriage for several months.. she thinks at least 12 months at POINT PLEASANT.. she knows of no record of her age, but she has always understood that she was born on Easter Day in the year of General Braddocks defeat which she thinks was in 1757 and according to her best recollection she was married at the age of 23 going on 24 years old on the 1st day of July but the year she can not recollect. At the time of her marriage she and her husband resided in Greenbrier County, Virginia but there being no parson near, they went over Peters mountain and married on the east side thereof at the house of one Henry Smith but whether this was in Greenbrier County or not (in Botetourt Co) she does not know nor does she recollect the name of the parson who married them. Her first child was born the next spring after her marriage and if living would be 60 years old next spring. She had ten children by her husband but has no record of their ages except a mutilated one from which she can tell that her 7th child was born November 8 1792 and her 10th and last on the 18 July 1799. She knows of no person living who witnessed her marriage.. she states that after her marriage she and her husband continued to reside in Greenbrier Co Virginia until a year or two after the birth of her youngest child that they then moved to Madison County Kentucky (early in 1800) where they resided a few years before they moved to Estill county, Kentucky when her husband died.. she 'thinks 11 years since in the month of September past and where she has ever since continued to reside.. She states positively that her husband was a pensioner of the govt. of the U.S. for several years previous to his death and drew as such $96 per year at Lexington, KY.

PENSION: 1838 Oct 5 - ZACHARIAH PHILLIPS of Estill Co, KY says on oath that he was born in the year 1763 and first became acquainted with ISRAIL MEADOWS DEC'D ABOUT 50 years ago in the County of Greenbrier, Virginia.. that he and BARBARA MEADOWS his widow who has signed the foregoing declaration were then living together as man and wife and continued to do so till the death of the said Izrail which took place as he believes on 30 September 1827 in Estill County and that he never heard any one to question the loyality of their marriage. At the time they had several children one named NANCY who he afterwards married. His wife was at that time a girl 18 or 20 and from what he has always understood as to the age of his deceased wife she would if living be 60 years old the next spring.

PENSION: He thinks that the said BARBARA MEADOWS at the time of their marriage was at that time in BOTETOURT COUNTY... /s/ ZACHARIAH PHILLIPS

PENSION: 1839 - the widow stated that she was married in 1778 or in 1779.

PENSION: 1842 - she made another statement in which she said that her previous statement that she was married 1778 or 1779 was an error, as she had become convinced that her marriage took place in 1776 - she having been a married woman at the time her husband was in the army. BARBARA MEADOWS was allowed pension on her application executed 5 Oct 1838. She stated that she had ten children by her marriage, the names of some of the children were:

PENSION: Oldest, a daughter, NANCY MEADOWS born 1779 and married ZACHARIAH PHILLIPS and was dead in 1839

PENSION: Oldest son, WILLIAM MEADOWS, aged 58 years in 1839 (born 1781)

PENSION: Seventh child, son JACOB MEADOWS, born 8 Nov 1792; in 1839 living in Indiana

PENSION: Tenth child, daughter REBECKAH MEADOWS, born 18 July 1799. (other children not shown).

PENSION: That her name before marriage was BARBARA GREENE.

The land described as being in Estill County on Miller's Creek and adjoining the land of John Horn appears to be near the land that was owned by Aaron Horn's widow, Elizabeth which was settled between 1778 and 1803 amid a lawsuit between mother and son. See Elizabeth, Person ID I153 in this database; includes some of the images of the actual land transaction and survey. I suspect that the John Horn listed in Israels Will was a descendant of Aaron Horn and Elizabeth but if correct, I do not know the relationship (DJS - 20 Feb 2013).

The Will of Israel Meadows should be found in the Estill County, Kentucky, Probate Records on FHL microfilm.

    • Residence: 8 Aug 1870, Beattyville, Lee County, Kentucky

    Notes:

Benjamin Franklin Phillips was born in Virginia, possibly in Monroe County of that state. Around February of 1822 his father, Zachariah Phillips, moved the family from Monroe County, Virginia to Scott County, Virginia. In 1825 the family moved again from Scott County, Virginia to Estill County, Kentucky (Bear in mind county formation - Scott County,VA may not yet have been formed and was not verified for these notes). In 1850 Benjamin and his family were living in Owsley County, Kentucky. Benjamin was a Blacksmith with personal property valued at $3000. In 1870 the family was living in Lee County, Kentucky and Benjamin was a minister. It is quite possible that once Benjamin settled down with his family that, he remained in the same place all his life because at this time in Kentucky's history, county lines were constantly being modified.
Benjamin appears to have used his middle name at least during some periods in his lifetime. His name is given as Franklin Phillips. On the 1850 and 1860 censuses, both in Owsley County, his name appears as B.F. Phillips while in the newly formed Lee County (1870) his name is given as Franklin Phillips. Finally, his name also appears in the pension records of his father, Zachariah Phillips, as Franklin.
