    Notes
    • According to information in I.G.I. records, Israel and Barbara were married on July 08, 1778.
    • On October 5, 1838 in Estill County Kentucky, Barbara Meadows, "an aged woman" made application for a widow's pension under the 1836 act stating that she is the widow of Israel Meadows; that she was married to him before he entered the service in the company of Captain Matthew Arbuckle, under Colonel Lewis; that she was born on Easter day in the year of General Braddock's defeat which he is told was in 1755; that she was married at the age of 23 going on
24 years of age and on the 8th day of July but she cannot recall the year; that there being no Parson near to where they lived they went over peters mountain and were married on the East side thereof at the house of one Henry Smith but whether it was in Greenbrier County or not she does not know; nor does she recollect the name of the Parson who married them; her first child was born the next spring after their marriage and if living would be 60 years old; that her
husband died in the month of September she thinks 11 years ago; that her husband was a pensioner for his service in the revolution at the rate of $96 per annum.

A number of sources state that Israel and Barbara were married in Botetourt County, Virginia and that is likely accurate; Consider the following:

Barbara stated that she was born on Easter Day in the year of Braddock's Defeat. That date of birth would then be Easter Day in 1755. Add 23 or 24 years to 1755 and you have 1778 or 1779; Greenbrier County existed at this time and is therefore a possibility for the marriage location or records of a marriage should they exist.

In Barbara's statements of October 5, 1838 she said that there were no Parson's near their home so they crossed over Peter's Mountain and were married on the east side. Today, there is a Peter's Mountain, presumably the same Peter's Mountain, on the border between West Virginia and Virginia. A portion of the western slope of Peters Mountain lies in Monroe County, West Virginia while all of the eastern side is in the current counties of Allegheny, Craig and Giles, Virginia. In 1778 or 1779, crossing almost any portion of Peters Mountain to the east slope would have put Israel and Barbara in Botetourt County, Virginia. However, a crossing in the southmost third of Peters Mountain would have put them in Montgomery County, Virginia.

Barbara said that her marriage took place at the home of Henry Smith. The earliest personal property tax records that I have been able to review for Botetourt County did not reveal a Henry Smith in the year 1783. Locating property for a Henry Smith in Botetourt County would be helpful confirmation.
