Neighbors and long time acquaintences of the late John Barnes and his widow, Milly Barnes, appear in court to set the record strait concerning a statement that had been made in 1821 by a former United States Congressman by the name of Colonel William Brown (see notes). He had stated that John Barnes did not have a wife.
On 19 June 1845, no less than seven people acquanted with John and Milly Barnes came forward and swore that they were husband and wife. One of them, Sarah Baird, stated that she was present for their wedding in Culpepper County, Virginia when she was about 9 years old and she recalled the birth of John and Milly's eldest son, James Barnes, about a year later.

11 March 1841 in Milly was in court giving deposition and stated that she and John Barnes were married 27 November 1784.
Sarah Baird swore in court that she was present at the wedding of John Barnes and Milly in Culpepper County, Virginia and that John and Milly's eldest son, James Barnes was born about one year after the marriage.
