      He was the son of Alfred Back and Isabel Caudill. He was known as "Glad John." He married Sarah Combs on Oct. 22, 1856 in Morgan County, KY. They had one child who died as an infant. John served in the Civil War, in the KY 5th Infantry Regiment, Company A. His wife Sarah died in 1894, and he got remarried in 1895 to Sarah Jan Barker. They had two sons, but both died young.
