There is a Social Security number that was issued to Cora M Bates whodied in Daviess County, Kentucky on 12 October 1959 at the age of 83. Subtract the age from the death date and you get 1876. Could this be the correct date of death for Cora Thompson-Bates? At some time in the 1950s or so, Cora lived in Tampa, FL and was visted by her nephew, Howard Francis Boyle and his children.

    Notes:

Below, stories passed down to me, David J. Schimka, from my grandfather, Howard Francis Boyle.

Katherine's parents owned land and slaves. When their children were grown they were given some land and a number of horses. During the Civil War, Union and Confederate soldiers would stop at their home to take flour and exchange their tired horses for fresh ones.

Kate outlived her daughter Maude. After Robert died, she tried to live at her home but wasn't able to. She then lived with her daughter Maude and finally with her daughter Cora after Maude died. She died in Ludlow, Kenton County, Kentucky while she was living with Cora. Maude lived until 1933 so Kate's death date is during or after 1933. I don't know when or where Cora died.

    Name:
Nancy seems to have gone by her middle name for most of her life and in particular, by her nickname, Kate, which is how my grandfather, Howard Francis Boyle, referred to her when he first told me about his family in Kentucky. Kate was his grandmother and he knew her personally when he was a child.

    Notes:

Some family trees report a second marriage to another "Elizabeth," probably Elizabeth Easton. I have found a record of a marriage between one Napoleon B. Thompson and Elizabeth Easton in Jefferson County, Kentucky on 23 Dec 1866. I have found no plausible evidence of a second marriage. At the time of the above recorded marriage, Napoleon B Thompson and Sarah "Elizabeth" Barnes were both alive and recorded on the 1850 - 1880 Federal Census enumerations in Grant County, Kentucky. From Grant County, Kentucky to Jefferson County, Kentucky is roughly 100 miles and I find it highly unlikely that the Napoleon B Thompson of Jefferson County, KY is the same person as Napoleon B Thompson of Grant County, KY.

    [Schimka.ged]

1910 Federal Census, Kentucky, Scott County, Stonewall Voting Precinct(Part of Magesterial District Number 6), for the family of Robert T. Thompson indicates that Napoleon Thompson was born in Virginia and that Elizabeth Barnes was born in Indiana. Robert Thompson's death certificate indicates that both Napoleon and Elizabeth were born in KY (the informant on the death certificate of Robert Thompson was Mrs. R. T. Thompson).

    Thompson and Skinner Cemetery
This cemetery is located in Grant County, about 2 miles on the left side of Denny Road when traveling from KY 36.

Note: I have not located this cemetery personally. I found the location in Volume III of Virgil Chandler Sr.'s book, Grant County Cemeteries. In addition to the directions in the book, I studied satellite imagery to come up with coordinates of what I "BELIEVE" is the cemetery.

    Other Events:

    • Guardianship: 12 Jun 1837, Grant County, Kentucky; Samuel Barnes appointed guardian to Elizabeth Barnes, infant heir of OLIVER BARNES, deceased, who thereupon executed and acknowledged bond in open court in the penalty of $60 with Jefferson Moore his security and took the oath as the law directs.

    Notes:

The above was transcribed by David James Schimka, 23 March 2012 from a microfilm copy of the originals. I took the liberty of correcting a few misspellings but left the rest, word for word, line for line. I have attached a copy of the original document image. Above all else, this document connects the descendants of Elizabeth Barnes to her ancestors. Later, 08 March 1847, a marriage bond is made in Grant County, Kentucky and a marriage license was issued that day upon the sworn oath by the groom that he was of lawful age "and the consent of the Guardian of the within Lady [was] personally given".

Perhaps there are additional documents where her parents died in Illinois but I have not seen any yet.

    Notes:

I have seen photographs of the cemetery where Hezekiah Skinner and Elizabeth are buried. The cemetery lies within a residential property along the highway somewhere near Corinth and Hinton Kentucky. Some of the cemetery stones are large obilisk type monuments.

The place of Death may have come from my grandfather, Howard Francis Boyle, but Hinton is in Harrison County, KY, not Scott County.

Census records show that Hezekiah and Elizabeth lived in Scott County from at least 1850 through 1900 and probably until their death.

    Died:
The obituary falls under the heading of "Hinton" which could be an indicator that Hezekiah Skinner died in Harrison County, Kentucky which is where the community of Hinton is located.
