The fifth page of the pension file states that Armistead appeared before the court at the age of 63. Unless another birth record is available (such as from church documents) I think the 1758 year of birth is more likely since 1758 is the same year estimated for his brother, John Barnes.
The third page states the soldier's age at a specific date which makes his estimated year of birth as 1756. This page is more difficult to read that the fifth.

Soldier stated that in 1776 he enlisted in the 7th Virginia Regiment for a term of two years and served until being honorably discharged at Valley Forge near Philadelphia in 1778.
