202 Excerpt from the Bach/Back Book
John Back married Catherine Robinson, ca. 1797/98. She was born 7 April
1780 in Tennessee. Her birth is recorded in the Catechism. She is described as
being red-haired with blue eyes, and of Scotch-Irish descent. Her parents remain
unknown, but she was one of the heirs of the extensive estate of her
brother, Thomas Robertson (as described in the court record, Order Book 3,
starting June 1854). He lived in Gum Springs, White County, Tennessee.
Catherine's sister, Rebecca Robertson-Maggard, was the mother of Susannah
Maggard, the wife of Henry Back, Jr. (the youngest brother of Catherine's
husband John).

204 Family tradition is that Thomas Thompson moved to Kentucky at the same time as his father-in-law but tax records suggest that Francis Robinson may have moved in 1817, as Francis stated in his Revolutionary War pension depositions, and that Thomas Thompson made the move in 1818 which is the last year that he appears in the Orange County, Virginia Personal Property Tax Lists. Thompson, Thomas T (I774)

211 For researchers of African American ancestors who were enslaved I provide the following list of slaves by their known names that I have found in the records of my ancestor, Francis Robinson. The following list comes from the Last Will and Testament of Francis Robinson (a full digital copy is attached to the profile of Francis Robinson in this family tree) in which he outlined a transfer of ownership of what appears to have been all of his slaves, because I did not find any reference to slaves in the estate sale. In all cases, the slaves were transferred to his immediate family members and specifically to his child and vehemently denies ownership to any of his children's spouses and forbade the use of the slaves as collateral on any existing or future debt.

Name (Gender) Known ownership, sale or other transfer

George (M) Transferred to his son, William Robinson in Will
Lewis (M) Transferred to his son, Benjamin Robinson in Will
Hamett (F) Transferred to his daughter, Nancy Robinson, who married Joseph Dunn, in Will
Amanda (F) Transferred to his daughter, Sarah Robinson, who married Arthur McCann, in Will
Melvina (F) Transferred to his daughter, Elender Robinson, who married Jacob Readower, in Will
Milly (F) Transferred to his daughter, Mary Robinson, who married William Collier, in Will
Fanny (F) and her child Rankin (U) Transferred to his daughter, Frances Robinson, who married Thomas T. Thompson, in Will
Hubbord (M) Transferred to his son, Samuel Robinson in Will
Clara (F) Transferred to his daughter, Jane Robinson in Will (Note: In Francis Robinson's Will he states that Clara is currently hired out to his son William for a term of four years at a rate of $30 per year which is to be paid to his said daughter, Jane Robinson. Note also that Jane was mentally handicapped and after her father's death, she lived with her older brother, Benjamin Robinson probably up to the time of her death 1 September 1852. If Clara were still living at the time of Jane's debt, it seems likely that she would have been transferred to her brother's estate since Jane was never married).

Researchers should also read the "Stringtown History" which is also attached to the profile page of Francis Robinson. In it, there is reference to slaves being brought with the Robinson and Thompson families when they moved to Kentucky in 1817 from Virginia. The families appear to have left from the vicinity of Orange County, Virginia then to Boone County, Kentucky in 1817 and finally Harrison County, Kentucky in 1818. Prior to the relocation to Kentucky, Francis lived most of the time in Spotsylvania and Stafford Counties in Virginia as stated in his Revolutionary War Pension file (also attached to Francis Robinson's profile page).

Concerning Fanny and her child Rankin:
The 1850 Slave Enumeration recorded my ancestor Thomas T. Thompson, husband of Frances Robinson who was the daughter of Francis Robinson, as the owner of two slaves. One female about 50 years old (Color - B) and one male child of about 15 years of age (Color - M). It is likely that these are the same Fanny and Rankin and that Rankin's father was white, mulatto.
The 1860 Slave Enumeration recorded my ancestor Thomas T. Thompson, husband of Frances Robinson who was the daughter of Francis Robinson, as the owner of four slaves. One female about 58 years old (Color - B); One male slave about 24 years old (Color - M); One female slave about 18 years old (Color - M); One male slave 11 months old (Color - M). Again, the first two are probably Fanny and Rankin.

214 Francis Meadows Sr. is confused in some sources with the service record of his son by the same name. It was Francis Meadows Jr. who served in the Revolutionary War and received a pension for that service. Meadows, Francis Sr. (I129)

220 From various sources, I see the date of marriage vary between the 27th and the 29th. The earlier date is probably a bond or license date and the latter date the actual marriage. Examination of the actual records should reveal which dates are correct for each type of record. (DJS). Family F518

Civil War Veteran Celebrates Ninety-First Birthday

Heidelberg, March 16th
Asberry ESTES, better known as "Uncle Add", celebrated his 91st birthday at his home here yesterday. He is one of the two Civil War pensioners left in Lee county.

Mr. ESTES had one of his old comrades among the 28 guests at the dinner in his honor, Robert D. HOUP, of Jessamine county. Mr. ESTES' oldest living child, 65, was present for the dinner. The youngest member of the family present was a great-grandchild two months old. Mr. ESTES' family consists of three children, 33 grandchildren, 101 great-grandchildren, and nine great great grandchildren.

Mr. ESTES was born in what is now Estill county, on the waters of Buck Creek, a son of Charles and Martha ESTES and a grandson of Brazil ESTES who was a soldier in the Revolutionary War. His mother was a daughter of John HATTON who lived years ago at the mouth of the hollow which bears his name down which the State highway runs. His mother was born near Beaver Pond, Clark county. His parents were buried in the old Brandenburg graveyard near the Baptist Church in Heidelberg.

He had a brother, Hiram, who was buried on his 97th birthday, February 28, 1933. Uncle Add was a member of the 8th Kentucky Regiment in the Civil War and despite his age his steps are firm and his memory excellent.

Never at any time, Mr. ESTES said, had he lived more than 15 miles from the place of his birth, and never during his 91 years has he been a party in a law suit or had a writ served on him. His wife, who was a sister of Godfrey and John NEWTON, died several years ago. More than four score and ten years of peaceful life without serious quarrel with friend or neighbor leaves Mr. ESTES with host of friends who wish for him "Many more happy returns of the day."
